Today, Jan. 31 1999, I am ready to recall the 54th anniversary of my departure from Istria. My feelings of sorrow have not changed. The pain has softened somewhat, but the wound and the scars will carry on into the next millennium. My heart and conscience are at peace as I been faithful to my culture and the teachings of my parents.  PEACE TO ALL.

O terra natia, o Istria aspra e rocciosa, addio!

Paranze dai fianchi robusti,
velieri dal rosso sperone,
o grosse e pesanti maone,
bragozzi dai ponti adusti,
addio, per sempre addio!

Lasciate che l'esule stanco
vi guardi per l'ultima volta,
o colline ammantate di verde
in cui lo sguardo afflitto si perde!

Mentre il cuore batte ed ascolta,
ascolta il rumore dell'acque,
lo sciacquio dei remi,
le grida nel cieo sonoro
di echi e riflessi,
ascolta lo strido del gabbiano,
i rami che frusciano nel pineto,
il merlo nel verde vigneto,
il tonfo della mazza nello squero lontano,
negli squeri dai rossi legnami,
all' ombra delle agili navi,
lenti i canti s'alzano gravi
degli ultimi Istriani.

Nel cuor disperato,
piange e lamenta
il ricordo sconsolato:
non piu`corse nei folti pineti,
non piu`canti nell'aure assolate!
Mai piu`, mai piu`!

Several local Istrian clubs in New York City began a tradition last year by posting their own page of holiday greetings on IstriaNet. This year's expanded greetings can be viewed by going to the Main Menu (click the blue text) and then select the Christmas bells in the menu.

Hopefully, next year there will be even greater participation by other Istrian organizations around the world.

THE CRY OF THE CHILD

?I an what I believe in?:
The cry of the child
Resounds high in the sky.
It meets the softness of the clouds
The whisper of the winds
The echo of thousands cries
Rising from an ungratefly earth.

Crisscrossed by the spidery-web
Of border threads,
Marked by multicolored splotches.
The globe differentiates
Where there is no difference,
It separates where there is union
It demarcates hate where
There should be love;

Yet I believe in the community of the spirit.

May the seas unite the continents,
Not divide them;
May the skies reverberate
With the cries of joy
From humanity reborn in
New hope for eternal love.

IstriaNet would like to start a White Pages directory of Istrians around the world, both home and e-mail addresses.  We are also starting a Genealogy section where we plan to list family surnames, the town(s) where each family originated, and any immigration information that is available to help individuals trace their family tree.

We would greatly appreciate your cooperation and participation in the data collection. Please send an e-mail message with your information and further suggestions to: administrator@istrianet.org. Thank you.

I find this web-site to be the best in detailing the many aspects of Istrian culture & I appreciate the way the web-site is continuously updated with the latest news regarding Istria. One thing that stands out as I look through these visitor pages is the amount of Istrians that live in New York. How did all the Istrians end up in New York, & all the Dalmatians end up in Chicago?

-Agli Istriani e specialmente ai Rovignesi-

Zaccai(also called  Busson) is my maternal family from Rovigno. I am doing a genealogical study on the name Zaccai. Can anyone provide additional data on this family that goes back to the 1400. Are you familiar with its surname (nomignolo) [Zaccai - Varum? - Pourquoi? - Perche?] which all mean" why? "in four languages?

Do you know any direct relation to the famous Condottiere Francesco Bussone,  the Count of Carmagnola ?
-----------

- Pourquoi? - Perche?] ch significa  perche? in quattro lingue?

I have had some of the best times of my life in Istra. The geographical beauty of the region combined with the hospitality of its people easily make Istra my favorite vacation destination. Whether I'm at the beach at Moscenicka Draga, or at the market-place in Opatija, there is no-where in the world that I'm more at home and at peace than in Istra. I was very happy to find this site - wow!  My mother is from Rijeka - father's surname is Runko and mother's is Brajuha. (This became anglesized in Australia to Braiuka.)

My family in New York took me to an Istrian Charities picnic a few years ago, so maybe I danced past some of you!  I have not been to Istria yet - only made it as far as Venice, but hope to go some day and meet the remaining family. What do others do when confronted with the statement "There's no such thing as Istria - it's Croatia!", as I used to get from a work colleague? Take care.

There are many young Istrian people around the world. I believe that if Istrian youth around the world get together in an organization or chat, many positive things can come out of it.We can plan meetings in Istria and other places around the world, in order to learn, understand and build on our already great Istrian heritage.

Puno pozdrava svima i dođite nam.

We spent many hours in the Pazin archives last summer tracing one branch of Spomenka's ancestry Trevisan. We went back about 8 generations, with nearly all of the family living in Rovinj. However, there are no graves in the Rovinj cemetery marked with that name, and several old folks we asked did not recall seeing any. Is there anybody out there who is a Trevisan, or is decended from a Trevisan, or knows about the family?

Second, We will be returning to Istra again this summer and will most certainly visit a marvelous little restaurant we discovered last summer It is in the small village of Kotle, a right turn onto a white road on your way to Hum. The food and wine are excellent, and the proprietor, Djani, is the perfect host. Hum and Kotle are out of the way no matter where you are going, but take the time and trouble to visit both.

Hi all,

Grazie e saluti a tutti!

Our parents emigrated from Istria to the USA in 1956. We also have an Uncle whom we have never met who emigrated from Istria to Buenos Aires in 1928 and whom niether our mother nor her siblings have heard from since the 1940's. It is our hope that perhaps you could be of some help or give us some direction in our search for this long lost uncle or any of his decendents.

The following is some basic information we have about him.  His mane is Giovanni Radessich (although in some of his later correspondence he replaced the "a" with an "o" to form Rodessich).  He was born in Istria in September of 1907 and as previously stated left for Argentina in 1928.

I have read stories about Istria, heard tales about Istria and listened to Istrian songs. Much of what I have heard has been spoken by the proprietor of the Croatian Islands Restaurant, a fine eating house near my home. Ivo is fervently Croatian and never stops singing the praises of his homeland. He is always insisting I go and have a look for myself. Istria is a long, long way from Perth, Australia, but I hope to visit there this year.

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to catch a ferry from Trieste, Italy, to either Rovinj or Porec. I haven't been able to track those connections down on the Internet. Any help would be appreciated.

Kind regards

Hello Istriani,

I was born in Trieste in 1954 and came to the US in 1956. My father has recently passed away and only left a vague picture of his hometown in Montona. Hello to all my Istrian brothers and sisters!

My mother is Croatian from Zagreb, and my father Greek (thus Christos). I was born in Boston and live there now, but I first came to Istra when I was six months old to be baptised in Pula.  I have returned to Istra almost every year since. There is no place on earth I would rather be right now than at our home in Porec.  I have many Istrian and Italian friends there and feel both Croatian and Istrian in heritage.  What makes Croatia stand out from so many other European countries is not only its breathtaking beauty, but the diversity of all its regions. It was so nice to see both Istrian Croatians, Dalmatian Croatians, and Zagreb Croatians all cheering our national Soccer team together for the 1998 World Cup.  I know that there is a "rift" between Croatians from other regions and Istrian Croatians, but most of that, I strongly believe, is politically fueled on many sides.   Now that socialism has fallen and so much potential awaiti! ng Croatia, I know that this gap in understanding will be bridged. It hurts me so much to hear about Istrian political groups not wanting to be a part of Croatia and seeking secession.  America is a country made up of so many different cultures, and while we certainly have our differences, our unity has made us the most powerful nation on earth.  I love Istra more than any other region of Croatia, but I love Croatia as a whole, not in pieces.  I know there are many that will never see it this way and I understand, but regardless I love Istra and only hope the best for its future.

Thanks for creating such a great site.

Hello and Happy New Year to all. I have just found this website thanks to my cousin. I am first generation born in the states. I was born and raised in the Park Slope Section of Brooklyn. My parents came from Brdo. My father's last name was Malinaric until it was changed to Molinari when he became a citizen of the U.S.A. I am married to a Crotian born in the states, his parents came from the island of Krk. I do not speak croatian. I did speak Italian, but have forgotten almost everything. I do speak what my children call the "Lingo" which if my memory serves me right was spoken by only 5 villages in Istria. I have never been to Istria, but would love to go. My sister Livia was born in Brdo. I have no other siblings. I would especially like to communicate with Roberta. I think we knew each other when we were kids. If you took ballet lessons then you're the one I knew. I really don't know why that stands out in my mind. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the person or persons who set up this website.

I wish my mom were alive, she would have loved this.

Hello to everybody. Born in Italy in 1966 I would not be supposed to define myself an Istrian though my grandmother and my father were born in Pola (Pula) and lived many years in Pisin Vecio (Stari Pazin). I have been visiting Istria for about 25 yrs and some of my best friends were those lying near the late summer evenings fires speaking a strange mixture of hrvatski, italian, istrian dialect when the c'uk sang its song.

I feel I am part of Istria as a heritage of my father and grandmother and I feel my ease with people from all over the world comes from the Istrian spirit.

Hello to everybody. We are citizens of the World and in the same time sons and daughters of the hills and the seas of Istria.
