I am trying to locate any information concerning the disappearance of my grandmother in Opatija during WWII. She went out for a walk and never returned to her apartment. Her name was DINA GRBANOVIC. As she was politically active, it seems she was arrested by the communists but never heard from again. She was in her early 40s.

My compliments to the site's creators and the very best wishes in the New Year to all that are reading it. A suggestion to the site's creators,-
try including a scanned map of Istria alone and Istriain the context of Croatia and Europe for the benefit of all that come aboard and cannot exactly place it geographicaly. Keep up the good work.

Happen to search the web for information about Funtana for my cousin. Both his father and mine grew up there. Unfortunately both are deceased. Would love to hear from anyone who knew either Angelo Pelicar (my father) or Rinaldo Gherghetta (Lawrence Gherghetta's
father). Hope to hear from someone.

Information taken from the marriage certificate of my great grandfather Mathew SFORCINA is that he was born in Umago Istria in 1836, his parents being Dominic and Clara (nee Centinari) of Gorizia and timber merchants in Trieste. He supposedly served in the Navy and arrived in Australia some time in the late 1850's to early 1860's having married here in 1868.

Records obtained from the Austrian Naval Archives have a Mathaus SFORZINA born 1826 in Lussin Grande who served firstly in the army 22nd Regiment of Infantry until transferring to the Navy in 1847 and being discharged in 1853.

Can anyone inform me where we can obtain further information to assist in the search for our heritage?

My Grandparents Anna and Johan Gelletich arrived in Philadelphia from Istria in the 1920's, they were in their 20's and married. I know little about their life in Istria. My Grandparents and mother spoke Croation fluently and quite a few other languages from the general area. I do not understand Croation, but I have studied a little Italian, a little French, a little Spanish and German. I understand that my Grandmother has relatives living in Trieste. I am interested in learning more about Istria.

I visited Venice, Italy a few years ago and would be interested in visiting Istria/Trieste in the future. I looked at the cuisine of the area and it warmed my heart. My Mother and Grandmother loved to cook so many of those dishes. I live on California coast now and love it here. I would enjoy knowing more of the culture and people and possibly corresponding with someone from the area.

Hello everybody,

I am from Moldova and I am interested in the people speaking Istro-Romanian. I was several times in Capodistria although I had no possibility to pay a visit further to Croatian Istria. One day I hope to do so. Istria is the only place in Europe where the West and East Romance langauges have had direct natural contacts over centuries. If there is anybody of Istro-Romanian origin I would be delighted to change some messages with him/her.

Ciao tutti,

They later moved had to move to Trieste during WW II. My grandfather, Giacomo worked in the rock quarries and my dad worked in the shipyard at Malfalcone. I am planning a trip to Istria next summer. My family name originated in the village of Mala Traba which is close to Beram and Pazin. I would like to visit distant relatives if there are any still there. I haven't been able to contact any of them but I have a few addresses that my grandfather received from a preist in 1985. This will be my first trip outside of the USA and I'm planning on seeing as many places in Europe that I can in a month or two. If anyone has any suggestions feedback or information on my family please contact me.

My paternal grandparents, who died before I was born, were from Croatia. A friend at work tells me that my grandfather's name is Istrian, so I would hope that someone would have known him or his family and can perhaps give me some information, because I know next to nothing.

His name was Mario Jelcich and he came to the United States some time after 1900. He was a longshoreman and lived in Hoboken, New Jersey. He was married to Maria Crkovic (this is the name of my grandmother, as was given to me by the Foundation at Ellis Island). I don't know if they were married in Croatia, or if they met here. They had four children: Mary, Faye and Albert (my father, also known as "Sonny"); the oldest child, George, died when my father was 9 years old. My father was the youngest and was born in 1919 in Hoboken. Mario died in an accident some time around 1928 or 1929 (it's hard to read the soapstone headstone in the cemetary). My grandmother later married John Millevoi (I was told he was from Trieste).

I only remember my grandmother's sister, whose married name was Vlacich. Her husband's first name might have been John or George.

Since I never knew my grandparents, it would be nice to try to reconstruct some portion of their lives.

Thank you!

I really liked your site. Greetings to all Istrians.
Will any MARASPINS with Australian (and perhaps Istrian) connections email me? My ancestor Antonio (Lewis) Maraspin was a sailor who came to Australiain 1850's and died in Sydney 1860. He was born about 1830 - 1835 and had two children born in Australia, Matthew (1858, Tasmania) and Maria(1861, Sydney, after his death). I travelled to Trieste and Piran last September and enjoyed it but would like to know if Antonio Maraspin came from that area.

Help! I am a graphic designer who does lots of promotional pieces for Croatian musicians who play the older folk music of the Balkans including the use of tamburitzas here in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Does anyone know where I can find (and purchase) clip art and stock photography for this topic that might help me make the musicians pieces more exciting and ethnically appropriate?

I have looked all over the net and am desperate to find something like this. Thank you very much.

Bella cosa! Propio.

Ho ancora tanti parenti in Istria (ex Zona B), e pure a Trieste, Torino, Ragusa (Sicilia), Argentina, Canada e qui in Australia.

Ciao a tutti, Erminio (George)

This is great, I just got into this web and I can't believe there is even a website for the place my ancestors are from. I live in Cleveland, Ohio with my wife and three daughters. My parents left Istria after WWII for obvious reasons and came to U.S. I was born in Trieste in 1955. My father was Clemente Grassi and our surname is Cucagna. Unfortunately, he died in In 1988. Istria was always a beautiful place.

Great site (of course, being managed by Istrians!). I'm trying to find all available - and hidden - information on the "machina", the windpump which was used in the Sicciole saltpans. Is there anybody who can tell me:

1. who invented it, and when;
2. why the sails had that particular, almost square shape;
3. any other useful information.

Thanks a lot,
Guido Ruzzier

1. chi l'ha inventata, e quando;
2. perché le sue vele avevano quella particolare forma, quasi quadrata.
3. qualsiasi altra informazione utile.

This is great site that should make all Istrians proud. One advise to those looking for long lost family members: use histrical names like Zara, Fiume, Parenzo, etc. Those of us who were forced out 55 years ago, or so, don't reconize the modern versions. You might take a trip to your local library to locate a map of the 1930, 1830, 1730, 1630, and on and on. Don't give up, keep looking.

Sempre allegri, muli.

To someone who gets homesick just about every week, this web site means more than can fit into this page. To those who have visited Rabac, you know what I am talking about. It doesn't matter what time of the year you go, the sea will greet you and welcome you. I must say I miss my mom's cooking (Marija napravi najbolje kalamare i sparoge s domacemi kobasicama) and my dad's wine (Sonoma and Napa may be famous, but nothing like his wine)njegova supa od crnega vina je super!

Pozdravi svima! Greetings to all!

I'm trying to trace my family tree, but have been unsuccesful in locating details of my paternal grandmother's family. If anyone knows anything about the PINZAN and/or FRANCA families from the Parenzo (Porec) and Torre areas, I'd be very glad to hear from you. Many thanks.

The site looks great! Congratulations to the team which keeps this little piece of virtual Istria alive. I know first hand how hard and frustrating that can be. Hopefully, one day a sufficient number of Istrians will wake up and realize the importance of this effort and then will make certain it is properly supported. Of course, I would like to see this happen sometime this century.  ;-)

Hey everyone. I was just thinking about the past couple of summers i spent in Rabac (near Labin)...it's an amazing place. Beautiful scenery, the nicest people on earth, clear water, great food, good friends, amazing nightlife (hey, I'm the one that keeps St.Andrea open over the summer! j/k)...what more could you possibly want?! I can't wait till next summer (just 5 months left, not that i'm counting or anything...heh heh...). If you need me, you know where to find me :)
