I am trying to locate any information concerning the disappearance
of my grandmother in Opatija during WWII. She went out for a walk and
never returned to her apartment. Her name was DINA GRBANOVIC. As she was
politically active, it seems she was arrested by the communists but
never heard from again. She was in her early 40s.
hi everyone, merry christmas
Hi Everyone My compliments to the site's creators and the very best wishes in
the New Year to all that are reading it. A suggestion to the site's
creators,- Hello! I would like to have further information from anybody about my surname which in origin was Jurcovich. In fact my grandfather comes from Porec, Croatia, but then this surname was turned into Giurco. I would be so grateful if anyone would contact me! I really look forward further news.

Manfred Fuchs <seafox@aon.at> Buon Natale e felice anno nuovo a tutti istriani nel mondo. Marry Christmas and happy new year to istrian people all over the World. giuseppe ritschl <giuseppe221@supereva.it> ciao a tutti, buon natale, lina alessandrini <lator@sympatico.ca> Information taken from the marriage certificate of my great grandfather Mathew SFORCINA is that he was born in Umago Istria in 1836, his parents being Dominic and Clara (nee Centinari) of Gorizia and timber merchants in Trieste. He supposedly served in the Navy and arrived in Australia some time in the late 1850's to early 1860's having married here in 1868. Records obtained from the Austrian Naval Archives have a Mathaus SFORZINA born 1826 in Lussin Grande who served firstly in the army 22nd Regiment of Infantry until transferring to the Navy in 1847 and being discharged in 1853. Can anyone inform me where we can obtain further information to assist in the search for our heritage? Vic Sforcina <bellavic@wn.com.au> I'm looking for people with surname Subiotto. rosaly <eeyore_1@dolfijn_nl>; I visited Istria this summer for the first. I loved it. I expected the beautiful landscapes, but what surprised me the most were the people. Everyone was so friendly and so full of life. I plan to live there one day. ryan hendley <blackspring3@hotmail.com> My Grandparents Anna and Johan Gelletich arrived in Philadelphia from Istria in the 1920's, they were in their 20's and married. I know little about their life in Istria. My Grandparents and mother spoke Croation fluently and quite a few other languages from the general area. I do not understand Croation, but I have studied a little Italian, a little French, a little Spanish and German. I understand that my Grandmother has relatives living in Trieste. I am interested in learning more about Istria. I visited Venice, Italy a few years ago and would be interested in visiting Istria/Trieste in the future. I looked at the cuisine of the area and it warmed my heart. My Mother and Grandmother loved to cook so many of those dishes. I live on California coast now and love it here. I would enjoy knowing more of the culture and people and possibly corresponding with someone from the area. Sharon Gelletich <Casun115@AOL.com>
Beautiful site, congratulations! Marco Devescovi <mdev@a-1.net.cn> Hello everybody, I am from Moldova and I am interested in the people speaking Istro-Romanian. I was several times in Capodistria although I had no possibility to pay a visit further to Croatian Istria. One day I hope to do so. Istria is the only place in Europe where the West and East Romance langauges have had direct natural contacts over centuries. If there is anybody of Istro-Romanian origin I would be delighted to change some messages with him/her.
Ciao tutti, Ciao, Roman Roman Beschieru <rbeschieru@hotmail.com>

Hey Everybody,
George (Erminio) Gardoz <georgeg@netconnect.com.au> Well, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all.. ovaj svima Istrijanima tamo gore! bojan blatnik <ritmolocoau@hotmail.com> I recently read a book called "Cafe Europa" by Slavenka Draculic and loved it. Bruno Matcovich <mabru@arnet.com.ar> Hello friends, I am trying to research the history of my family name, Grisancich. My grandparents, Giacomo and Angela Grisancich were from Pirano as is my father, Natale. They later moved had to move to Trieste during WW II. My grandfather, Giacomo worked in the rock quarries and my dad worked in the shipyard at Malfalcone. My dad came to the United States in the early 1950's and settled in NY. If you have any information on this name or if you know my father, please write. He would be overjoyed to here from his Istrian friends. Thank you. Hello,
Carrie Hrastich <lil_carrieh@yahoo.com> My paternal grandparents, who died before I was born, were from Croatia. A friend at work tells me that my grandfather's name is Istrian, so I would hope that someone would have known him or his family and can perhaps give me some information, because I know next to nothing. His name was Mario Jelcich and he came to the United States some time after 1900. He was a longshoreman and lived in Hoboken, New Jersey. He was married to Maria Crkovic (this is the name of my grandmother, as was given to me by the Foundation at Ellis Island). I don't know if they were married in Croatia, or if they met here. They had four children: Mary, Faye and Albert (my father, also known as "Sonny"); the oldest child, George, died when my father was 9 years old. My father was the youngest and was born in 1919 in Hoboken. Mario died in an accident some time around 1928 or 1929 (it's hard to read the soapstone headstone in the cemetary). My grandmother later married John Millevoi (I was told he was from Trieste). I only remember my grandmother's sister, whose married name was Vlacich. Her husband's first name might have been John or George. Since I never knew my grandparents, it would be nice to try to reconstruct some portion of their lives. Thank you! Margaret Jelcich <emskware@hotmail.com>
