Colomba senza pace....

Ciao, Mario.

Although we may be far away from our homeland, and, as the years pass, we lose more and more of our dear friends and family members, during these special holidays, our loved ones (friends and family, far and near - even those who are no longer with us) and our beloved homeland are close to us in our memories. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, to Istriani all over the world, especially those from Caldier, Jessica, Zumesco, Montona and Pisino.

My family also extends personal wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you, Marisa, and your family.

Verso il Vento

(Inspirato dalla storia omonima
di Ondina Lusa)

Una lucertola guizza
tra uno scarpone e la caviglia saguinante.
Si ferma sbalordita,
ascolta il silenzio delle cicale ammutite
dagli spari.

Sorpreso, un gabbiano sperduto
portato dal Vento
ridirige il suo volo verso il mare,
assieme ad un? Essere ceruleo.

Sussurra alla sua bambina:
Su, sissu` cavallo!
Ondina vien dal ballo
Ballo, baleto,
Non te daro`mai uno sciafeto!?
E sorride per sempre.

I am very pleased to find this website. For years I have been looking for ways to discover more about my Istrian heritage, as my grandmother came from Nabrezina. Recently I have been able to receive her birth and baptism documents but still have found very little about Nabrezina, especially old photos or postcards from the time period around 1900. I am also interested in any assistance anyone can offer about genealogical matters in this region. My families' surnames of interest are KAUCIC and PERIC. Thanks.

I would dearly like for anyone with interests/connections of the district ranging from Cipiani, Buje,Umago and Salvore to contact me. I was born in Cipiani and lived in Monteneto, which is near Zambratia. I migrated to Australia, with my parents, in 1956. I speak, apart from English, Italian and just a few words of Croatian. I try to keep in touch with some developments, and I find it very interesting reading messages from present residents and others with similar origins, and even people that have travelled through the region.

Please write to me and tell me .. anything. My email: georgeg@netconnect.com.au

I would like to trace my uncle, Manzin Francesco? (I don't remember the exact name) brother of my father notary Manzin Domenico. My uncle, imigrated to the united state of america from Dignano d'Istria in the year 1946/47/48(I don't remember the exact year). The last contact was made with my parents in Monfalcone. My uncle, infact may be dead (by now he would have had almost 100 years). I desire in anyway to contact his children or relations.

So, in my next trip to the states, i could meet them.

Thanking in advance,

Hi everybody,

I was born in Opatija in the year 1936. I knew then that I used to have an uncle whose name I cannot remember. He was my father's brother. My father's name was Domenica Manzin. My uncle was sent on exile between the years 1946 and 1947. If you have any useful information, please write to idiae7@yahoo.it

My family immigrated to the United States in 1907 from Volosca, Austria - now Volosko in Croatia. Their ethnicity was Italian. Recent birth of a grandson, to carry on the name, has sent me on a quest of my heritage. I am originally from Philadelphia, PA and remember visiting a club every Sunday with my father. The name always threw me as it did not sound Italian. I believe I now know why. Any help I can get, about points of contact, to trace the family would be appreciated.

The thoughts and prayers from many of us here in Sydney are extended to you Marisa and New Yorkers who remember our origins from Istria.

What a horrific event for you all. May you have the courage, spirit and inspiration to deal with it all. Thank you for for the wonderful work you are doing through this great web site to bring people to a better understanding of each other and to bring people together.

My feelings and concern goes to all Istrian-Americans but especially to those who come from Lussino, Cherso, Sansego, Pola, Rovigno and the towns which I know and can identify with so much.

All the best to you all.

Gabriella, Dario and others,

I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your good wishes. When the chips are down, all North Americans, as well as the civilized world, stick together.

I live in Manhattan where the horrible tragedy occurred, but luckily about 4 miles north of the site, and so not even the initial smoke reached where I live (but we sure could smell it a few days later). I watched the entire event live on local cable TV, except for the initial plane crash and the collapse of building number 7.

I am in total shock all day, but my 78-year-old mother has had moments of hysteria all day where she recalled the bombings and horrors she survived in World War II. She lost two brothers and a younger sister, innocent civilians all, and other friends and family - all victims of the Fascists, the Nazis, and finally Tito's OZNA.

Mother remembers those terrible times, and burst into tears several times today. She could not bear being witness to this new round of terrorism. Do any civilians deserve such acts of cowardice? I think not. I may not live close to the area of devastation, but in the next few days I am sure to learn that some of my neighbors and acquaintances were among the casualties.

Our prayers are with the families of the many, many innocent victims here in New York City, in Washington, DC, and all across the country where I know all are united tonight in outrage against this crime against humanity.

Dear Marisa,

We were horrified by the devestating events which occured today in the U.S. It hardly seems adequate to say, but all of us living in Canada (your neighbors to the North), share in the fears, the tears and anger that anyone could commit such horrific acts of violence against other human beings.

Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you, your family and everyone living in the United States. As Dario said, many of us have friends or even family living in the States, so we are all affected by these traumatic events.

My grandmother, Erminia PICINICH, daughter of Maria BRATULIC PICINICH and Antonio PICINIC (diver, pilot, game warden) grew up on LUSSINPICCOLO. I am interested in communicating with anyone researching the BRATULICH and/or PICINICH families.

I am also trying to locate the birth records for my grandmother. She was born in Zara. I would be willing to pay someone to search for her birth records, and the birth and death records of her parents and siblings.

The love for Istria that my husband (who spent most of his chilhood there) and I have brought us to give our first-born baby girl its name: ISTRA. She was even born with a "white freckle" on her head the shape of Istria (almost like a heart).

I discovered this site as I was searching for updated sites on tourism in Istria before we leave for Opatija next weekend. This is also the first time Istra is going to visit the "terra sacra" of Istria.

It is full of useful and little-known information and I am grateful for being able to expand my knowledge of this very much loved peninsula.

What a great site. I spend most of my spare time reading and viewing all the information. Even checking the weather.

I'd love to hear from anyone with the same surname, especially if you come from around Vizinada. I was born there 1951, "emigrated" to Italy in 1957, then emigrated to New Zealand in 1960.

Parlo umpoco Italiano.
Govorim samo malo Hrvatski, razumim vize nego govorim. Imam joz jednu sestru sto zivi u Porecu.

Hi all Istrians,

It is said that my grandgrandgrandgrandgrand (5 times grand-) father came from Istria to Sweden and met a nice girl... Now I wish to go to Istria and see what it is like! I think it is very interesting and beautiful. Yesterday I finished Claudio Magris book Mikrocosmos, and it was wonderful and mostly about Istria! So - one day I'll go there, I'm sure!

Ogni notizia é per me preziosa.

Grazie.

I´m searching for my grand father Nicolo Pernar. Policeman of Zara. His father was Vincenzo Pernar and his mother Margherita Chicchio o Kjkja. He was married to Anna Varagnolo, and he had 3 doughters. I know he had 4 brothers Giacinto Giuseppina Giovannina and Anna. The girls are in Australia but I don´t know how to reach them. Please if someone knows something please, write to me. After 52 years at least we deserve to know the true.

with all my hope
Thanks

Hello,

Today is the first I've ever heard of Istria! I'm interested in learning more. My family name is Bratti, and I noticed you have information about this family in your Heraldry section.

My great grandfather's name was Vincent Bratti, born about 1840 in Italy. He lived in Cento, IT. He died 1917. He married Clementa Tesini, born 1839, and she died 4 May 1925. I know little else beyond this information. I do know that they lived in a town outside of Bologna and Cento named Crevalcore.

I would like to hear from anyone sharing the name or having additional information about the Bratti family.

I just returned from a two week vacation in Istria, my home land, and altough I left as a child I still realize every time I go back that I am and always will be an Istrian. From the gentle rolling hills to the deep blue majestic sea, Istria is the place of my destiny. A big hello to all the Istrian in the world.

I enjoyed your site very much. I am in the process of learning about the land and people from which my parents were born. Istria is a dynamic region where many cultures collide. It is not enouugh to say one is Italian, Austrian, or Yugoslavian if one is from that region. I will be witnessing that first hand as I am visiting Istria with my parents at the end of summer 2001. I look forward to learning more about my family's history and the people that share their history.

Any Istrian golfers out there who are thinking about visiting this summer or would like to make this one of the reasons, my colleagues and I were commenting that it would be great if we could organize a golf meet between Istrians of the world and the domestics for the purpose of socializing, advancing golf in Istria (still in its toddler phase) and simply creating think-tanks on Istria's future and investment development or whatever.

There is only one course, at Brioni, 9 holes with sand greens but its well kept and the scenery and wildlife is simply remarkable - a paradise. Any interest out there drop a note to me or http://www.gradpula.com/sport/golfclub/

Hope to see you at Brioni, Klaudio.

Leggenda istriana

Le candele per noi accese
si stanno spegnendo una ad una....
La notte giunge, ormai,
ne` ci sara` piu` l'alba!
Un giorno, forse, si raccontera`
di un popolo che
per viver libero
ando` a morire lontano,
lontano dal proprio mare
e da una terra rossa, che,
vista dall'alto
 sembra

It is nice to see people who care about Istria. My father was born in Istria, but had to leave after WWII. He lived in Bergamo before coming to Canada in 1969. Our family name was changed to accommodate Italian pronounciation. It changed from Bacul to Bazzul. My Father grew up just outside of what is now Pazin, Mitterberg, El Pasino, whatever it may be called.

I am curious about where the name originally came from. Some of us think it may have originally been Baculo (da Venezia), however I think it has roots deep in Austria-Hungary. I have no idea, but if anyone has any thoughts I would like to here them.

Ciao e Grazie mille

Conversational Croatian for Business and Travel Course offered at Queensborough Community College in Bayside (Queens), New York. Check out the article in Vjesnik on line for Wed Feb 28, 2001:

http://www.vjesnik.hr/html/2001/02/28/Clanak.asp?r=sss&c=1

This is an experimental pilot course and it seems that it is pretty successful. The course is called "Conversational  Croatian I for Business and Travel". It is offered by the Continuing Education Department of Queensborough Community College of the City University of New York. It meets for ten 2-hour sessions (Monday nights 7-9 P.M.) and the cost is $140 + $25 for the text and the audio tape.

Presently the course is full but there is a waiting list. The course will be offered again in the fall. If anyone is interested, they should contact the Queensborough Continuing Education office at 718-631-6343 and ask to be placed on the waiting list for the course for the fall semester. I believe there are already four people on the list. The class limit is fifteen. By the way this is the first course in Croatian at Queensborough (perhaps not at other colleges).

If anyone has any questions, I will be happy to attempt to answer them.

Regards to all,

Cari amici...

Io cerco signore ZIGANTE Zvedan, nato 10.10.1929 a Loka, Koper-Capodistria, Slovenia. Jugoslavia. Deve vivere in Melbourne o Sidney.

Grazie
JASNA

I found your web site through one of the messages on a forum that I subscribe to and really enjoyed the pictures in particular. They are great!! My niece and her family visit Rovinj quite frequently from Vancouver as her father (Deceased) had a place there. My family comes from the far eastern part of Croatia (Cepin) but am hoping to go to Croatia this spring.

Io cerco Zigante Zvezdan, nato 10.10.1929 in Loka vicino a Capodistria-Koper.

I was born in Fiume. My parents were Elide and Benvenuto Orasen. We left Fiume after the war, settled in Siracusa (Sicilia) for about six years and finally emigrated to N.Y. We are happy here, but will NEVER EVER forget our beautiful FIUME. I want to send my love to all the people from Fiume who are scattered all over the world.

Hi, my name is Branka. I was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1970, 4 years after my mother left her homeland of Istra (Triviz, Pazin). My father is Slovenian, from the region of Dolenska. I have had the fortune to visit Istra twice, once as a child with my mother, then two years ago on my own. For this reason Istra holds a very special place in my heart. I also have many relatives still residing in Istra, mainly in Porec, which are a delight to visit. As you might imagine, I am delighted to have found this web site! Ciao Branka

Born in USA. I'm 74 and have visited Istria, etc. since 1984 almost annually. I paint in Venice, have a mural installed there in Hotel Adua. But I find Istria enchanting as well. Pula yes but particularly Ravign which has its own character while reflecting the feel of Venezia. I return to Venice-Croatia in March for 3 months of adventure. My parents were born in Veli and Mali Brgud, 16 kilometers from Opajija. . I'll stay in Hotel Ambasador last week of March 2001 in Opatija. Be seeing you!

Tanti auguri Istriani nel mondo, felicita e buona fortuna a tutti!

My parents were born in Istria. I visited there when I was 9 years old. I feel a great pull from Istria, a great longing to learn more about family history. I am so glad to see that so many people from all over the world also have this feeling toward Istria. I will be visiting this site often.

Ciao tutti.

Firstly may I wish all who venture to this site a prosperous New Year (2001). Having only just found this site I am sure to spent much time reading and enjoying it's entries. I am 51 years old, born in Monfalcone, Italy. Migrated to Australia in 1950 with my parents (Now both deseased) and have almost lost the skills necessary to speak italian!!! So, for those of you who write in italian it is going to take a little longer to read your messages than than for those writing in "english". Regards and good fortunes. Dario Ritossa
