10. Under
Vlado Smilovic's watchful eye, the last sneaker adjustments are made
before entering the "coral". A computer chip must be affixed
to the shoe laces that will be sensed at the start and finish lines.
Alhough it may be 15 or 20 minutes between the time the first and last
runner crosses the finish line, the computer senses the time on each
runner's chip. Thus, everyone has an equal chance, whether in the first
row behind the starting line or in the last half mile down Main Street.
